Is there a difference between blacktop and asphalt?

Even though the terms “blacktop” and “asphalt” are often used interchangeably, blacktop is technically a different product than asphalt and is much more malleable. Both are made of bitumen and crushed stone. However, the blacktop contains more stone and is processed at a higher temperature.

Asphalt is available in several different grades based on its intended usage. Asphalt can be applied either hot or cold with no heating. Specific mixes include quiet asphalt for limiting noise in residential areas and porous asphalt, which permits stormwater to permeate through to the soil below. The latter’s qualities make it a popular choice for parking lots that see a lot of rain.

It is necessary to point out this distinction because it illustrates the importance of dealing with an experienced paving contractor who can help you choose the most suitable option for your resurfacing projects.

As the name suggests, Custom Blacktop customizes paving solutions based on your needs and budget.

Why choose asphalt over concrete?

Asphalt is a durable, versatile paving material for new roads, driveways, pathways, and lots. Although concrete is a much stronger material, asphalt has many advantages that may affect your decision.

Asphalt benefits:

  • Much more cost-effective
  • Permits faster installations (a new driveway can be installed in roughly 2 days compared to 7 days with concrete)
  • Requires less curing time
  • Cheaper and quicker to repair
  • Handles high-traffic volumes well
  • Retains the sun’s heat for snowmelt
  • It isn’t affected by salt in the winter
  • Well suited to colder climates
  • Easier for people to walk and run on
  • Quieter for traffic noise
  • Better traction and high skid resistance
Why choose concrete?

Concrete is tough to beat in terms of its usage for driveways, patios, sidewalks, and streets.

Concrete’s benefits:

  • Superior durability (up to 50 years)
  • Low maintenance
  • Enhanced design flexibility (colours, textures,
  • More environmentally friendly, lower carbon footprint
  • Less prone to wear and tear (ruts, potholes)
  • Handles heat better
  • Better load distribution for accommodating heavy vehicles
  • Lighter colouring is more favourable at night
  • Concrete overlays may prove a better option than asphalt

Why is sealcoating important?

Sealcoating is a mixture made of coal tar, water, and different polymer additives that act as a shield for driveways. It defends asphalt against the effects of oils, gas spillage, the sun’s UV rays, cold weather, and rain.

Sealcoating offers a layer of protection (roughly 25mm or less) that also enhances the curb appeal of your commercial or residential property. It’s a cost-effective measure that should save you the cost of milling or repaving if done once every 2-3 years. If your asphalt driveway appears faded, cracked, pitted, or covered with oil stains, your surface is probably overdue.
